Situated adjacent to the River Wharf, Walmgate was to provided state of the art, luxury student living in the heart of York city centre. Developer Student Castle wanted to deliver a unique student experience to rival any across the UK.

Scope

HE Simm was selected by its customer of 45 years, Vinci Construction, to deliver full MEP fit out works to this large student development. The design included a fully equipped gymnasium, communal games room (facilitating both computer consoles and table tennis etc) and a community picnic garden.

Delivery

Our project team were extremely agile while delivering Walmgate. The end user had extremely high expectations for the finished product, with some agreed items changing at the last minute, meaning 300 rooms were to be handed over during the last 4 weeks of programme. This was managed by effective communication and collaboration between our team and their counterparts at Vinci, resulting in us meeting the deadline set by Student Castle.

Due to the city centre location of the project and the historic topography of York, the project presented our team with some significant logistical challenges. A logistics plan was developed and enforced, applying a ‘just in time’ delivery schedule, one delivery per day and restricted working hours, in line with the city’s planning requirements

Benefit

We are specialists in the student accommodation sector, and it is due to our expertise and the relationship we have with Vinci Construction, we were able to deliver this project on time and within budget. In addition to this the finished product met all of the end user’s requirements, further reinforcing our relationship with Vinci Construction, who remain a valued customer to this day.
